Government-owned National Petroleum Marketing Company Ltd. awards a $40 million contract to a company owned by personal friends of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Ralph and Monica Gopaul, in spite of the company not having any fuel trucking experience or fuel tankers in its fleet, and submitting a bid well above that submitted by the company that holds the current contract (with 10 years’ experience). Initially, the Prime Minister tries to evade questions, but is eventually forced to admit knowing the Gopauls, in whose home she stayed for approximately 3 months as a guest.
