Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar embarks on a two-week visit to India with a delegation of including 100 private individuals.
In spite of assurances by Foreign Affairs minister, Suruj Rambachan, that the Government of India paid for the Prime Minister’s visit, she presents in Parliament, expenses totalling $233,000 to be paid by Trinidad and Tobago for her sister’s travel with her. Caribbean Airlines is also shown to have paid almost $400,000 for expenses inclusive of first-class airfare, hotels and per diem allowances for Board member, Pundit Abhedanand Sharma Perdad and his wife to travel separately and join the Trinidad and Tobago delegation in India. Airline chairman George Nicholas says the Pundit (with no aviation management experience) is in India to negotiate code sharing with Air India; airline sources say a senior, experienced official is already in India for the same purpose.
